JOYCE TAYLOR
My grandmother was born in Pennan (her father had been a boat builder in Pennan before moving to the Tor of Troup to work as the saw miller).
When I was in my teens and during my summer holidays, I would get my dad to drop me off in Pennan so I could spend the day sketching and painting. I remember the first drawing I ever sold, while I was at school, was a detailed pen and ink drawing of the entire village and the landscape of Troup head drawn from my view point on Pennan Head.
During these sketching trips I would pop into the shop, where I would chat with Mabel the shop keeper who remembered my granny as a young girl, thus giving her the opportunity to reminisce about past times.
I also remember a very kind resident who brought me a flask of tea and home bakes, after having seen me sitting all day sketching, very typical for the Pennan community who love to welcome visitors from near and far!
